Calblanque is a 25-square-kilometre Regional Park on the Murcia coast, protecting the last stretch of undeveloped Mediterranean coastline between Cartagena and La Manga. Six untouched beaches, dune landscapes, salt marshes and cliff paths. It is a 45-minute drive from Torrevieja, an hour from Alicante, and one of the most underrated day trips on the whole Costa Cálida.

What Calblanque actually is
Calblanque was designated a Regional Park in 1992 to stop developer encroachment from La Manga. The park runs from the western edge of La Manga southwest to the outskirts of Cartagena, protecting roughly 12 kilometres of coastline plus the Peña del Águila and Monte de las Cenizas inland ridges.
Inside the park boundary: no development. No hotels, no restaurants except one snack kiosk (May-October only), no beach clubs, no umbrella rentals. Six beaches, each divided by rocky headlands. Access via a single dirt road from the northern entrance, or a longer paved road from Cartagena.
The six beaches
Playa Larga. Largest and most accessible. 1.2 km sandy beach, dunes at the eastern end. Kite-friendly on Levante-wind days. Best all-round beach for a full-day family visit.
Playa Negrete. 400 metres of sand backed by low cliffs. Quieter than Playa Larga. Popular with paddleboarders on calm days.
Playa Parreño. Small pebble-and-sand cove, sheltered by rocky headlands. Best snorkelling in the park. Access via 200-metre downhill path.
Playa Cala del Barco. Naturist-tolerant. Sandy, backed by low dunes. Least crowded.
Playa Cala Reona. Rocky, small. Best photography light in golden hour.
Playa Punta Negra. Southernmost of the six. Sandy, backed by cliff walls, exposed to the open sea. Best for advanced snorkellers and free divers.
Access and parking
By car. Northern entrance from La Manga is the standard route: exit AP-7 at Los Belones, follow signs to Calblanque, dirt road for 3 kilometres to the parking lots.
Peak-season parking limit. From 15 June to 15 September, the park operates a capacity-controlled parking system. Only 400 vehicles admitted per day; reservation required through the murciaturistica.es parking booking system. Slots open 15 days in advance and typically fill within 48 hours for August weekends. Off-season (October to May), no reservation needed and parking is free.
Alternative peak-season access: the free shuttle bus from Los Belones runs every 30 minutes June to September. No car needed. Recommended for August weekends when the parking is full by 09:00.
Bicycle access. Park is bike-friendly. From La Manga south, take the paved bike path to Los Belones then the dirt road into the park. Total from La Manga south end to Playa Larga: 8 km, mostly downhill on the way in.
When to go
October to April. Best season. Empty beaches, cool comfortable weather, no parking permit needed, sea temperature 16-20°C.
May to June. Beaches start filling, sea temperature 20-23°C, still no strict parking limits until 15 June.
July to August. Peak season, parking reservation mandatory, hot (32-35°C), crowded by 11:00 on weekends. Best if you arrive by 08:30 or use the shuttle bus.
September to October. Shoulder season sweet spot. Water still 22-25°C, crowds gone, parking free.

- Reef-safe sunscreen (marine reserve rules encourage biodegradable formulations)
- Snorkel gear for Playa Parreño rocky zones
- Sturdy sandals for the dirt-road and inter-beach headlands
- Cash (the snack kiosk sometimes card-free)

Regular Calblanque day-trippers live in either Los Alcázares (Mar Menor side, 20 min drive to the park), Cartagena or La Manga (5-10 min from the park entrance).

FAQ
Is Calblanque family-friendly? Yes for Playa Larga (long shallow-entry beach, dune play area). Under-fives can wade safely; older kids swim comfortably. No lifeguard, so parental supervision required.
Are dogs allowed? Yes on lead outside beach access zones. Beach access with dogs is prohibited during the summer season (15 June-15 September) on all six beaches.
Is there a fee to enter? No entrance fee. Parking reservation in peak season is free but capacity-limited.
How rough are the dirt roads? Passable in a standard car. 15 km/h speed limit. Not friendly to low-clearance sports cars in rainy weather.
Is there anywhere to stay overnight inside the park? No. All accommodation is outside the park boundary in La Manga, Los Alcázares or Cartagena.
