Hogueras is a Comunidad Valenciana fire festival cousin to Valencia's Fallas. Each Alicante district commissions an artist (artista fogueril) to build a massive cardboard-papier-mâché-wood-foam statue depicting current political, social or satirical themes. Across the city, around 90 such fogueres are erected in the first half of June. On the night of 24 June (San Juan), all of them are burned in a synchronised public ceremony called the cremà, with municipal firefighters managing the flames.

Origins date to the 19th century when households burnt old furniture on the summer solstice. The fiesta was formalised in 1928 and is now declared an Event of International Tourist Interest (Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional).

The peak attendance moment is the cremà night, where roughly 350,000-450,000 spectators crowd central Alicante. Hotel prices triple. The TRAM Metropolitano (light rail to Benidorm and beyond) runs all-night service during the festival.

1. One week of year, central districts are unliveable for noise-sensitive residents. Mascletà runs at 14:00 daily 20-23 June and breaches 110 dB. The cremà night runs through to 03:00. Apartments in the Casco Antiguo, Centro, Mercado and Carolinas districts get the full audio. Buyers who want quiet from June 20-24 should pick further-out neighbourhoods.

2. Short-let income spike. A central Alicante 2-bed apartment that nets €70-€90/night in normal summer hits €200-€350/night for the Hogueras week. If you run a VUT (tourist licence), this single week can deliver 8-12% of your annual short-let revenue.

3. Insurance and comunidad considerations. Embers from cremà occasionally land on apartment balconies. Most buildings cover this under standard fire insurance but check the policy specifically before the festival. The comunidad usually issues a circular reminding owners to remove flammable items from terraces.

Where to base yourself for the 2027 festival (if you are visiting)

Three logistics options, in declining proximity:

• Inside Alicante centre: maximum festival immersion but expect €180-€350/night for a basic 1-bed. Best for Casco Antiguo, San Antón, Ensanche-Diputación.
• Playa de San Juan or El Campello (15-20 min by TRAM): beach base with overnight TRAM service to central Alicante for the cremà. Much cheaper accommodation (€100-€180/night for a 2-bed).
• Benidorm or Villajoyosa (40-50 min by TRAM): cheapest accommodation, longer commute, less convenient for the late-night events.

What we expect for Hogueras 2027

Festival dates will land 20-24 June 2027 with the cremà on the night of 23-24 June (always). The city tourism office publishes the official programme around 15 May each year via Visit Alicante. Bookings for the prime central apartments open in February and the best stock is gone by April.

Is Hogueras safe for children?

Yes during daytime events (mascletà, ofrenda de flores, parades). The cremà night involves large crowds, loud noise and embers; most local families with young children watch the cremà from rooftop terraces or from the periphery rather than central plazas.

Can I rent my Alicante apartment during Hogueras week?

Yes if you hold a VUT licence under Comunidad Valenciana Decreto 92/2009 + Decreto 9/2024. Demand far exceeds supply that week so booking calendar fills 4-6 months ahead. Comunidad statute restrictions on VUT do still apply, so check first.

Does Hogueras happen in towns other than Alicante city?

Smaller versions run in San Vicente del Raspeig, San Juan de Alicante, El Campello and a few inland villages, but the Alicante city festival is by far the largest and the only one with International Tourist Interest status.
