Costa Blanca is not California. The Mediterranean generates small swell most of the year; the reliable surf windows are narrow. But a handful of spots on the Costa Blanca and the Costa Cálida do deliver rideable waves, and every year more coastal buyers ask us about them before choosing where to live. This is a working surfer's practical guide to what breaks, when, and where you can realistically ride four days a week from October through March.

The reality of Mediterranean surf

Most Costa Blanca coastline gets waves under 0.5 m for 8 months a year. The rideable window is October through March, when Atlantic depressions push through the Strait of Gibraltar or when strong easterly Levante winds create wind swell locally. Expect 3-5 solid days a month in season, plus occasional larger windows in November and February.

For consistent flat-water pursuits, the coast is excellent: kiteboarding at Torre la Sal, windsurfing at El Palmar, wingfoil year-round. The kite / wing scene is stronger and better-organised locally than pure surf.

Costa Blanca surf spots by consistency

1. El Portet and El Arenal (Denia)

Small point-break setup on the north side of Denia's Cap Sant Antoni. Works with north-east swell in autumn and winter. Right-hand reef break at El Portet on decent days; sand-bottom beach break at El Arenal for beginners. Best 3-hour window is dawn before Levante wind picks up.

Season: October to February. Level: Beginners to intermediate.

2. Granadella (Javea)

Small cove tucked in the Cap de la Nao side of Javea. Picks up refracted swell that misses most of the Costa Blanca coast. Reef bottom, rideable at head high on the biggest days, otherwise mush. Access controlled by Javea town hall in summer; permit-free in winter.

Season: October to February. Level: Intermediate.

3. San Juan (Alicante)

Alicante's northern city beach, 7 km of sand, 24-hour access. Longboard-friendly on smaller days, shortboard-viable at chest to head high. Consistent for a Mediterranean spot because the Cap de la Huerta headland refracts north-east swell straight into it.

Season: October to April. Level: All levels.

4. Guardamar dunes

Wide sandy beach with high dunes, south of Alicante. Beach break, pure sand-bottom. Works with south-east swell (Levante wind) in autumn. Wesna surfers rate this as the most consistent local wind-swell spot.

Season: October to March. Level: All levels.

5. La Manga (Cabo de Palos side)

Rock-point setup on the Costa Cálida edge. Works with south-east swell only, so windows are rare (4-6 sessions a year). But when it works, it's one of the cleanest waves on the coast, right-hand reef.

Season: October to February. Level: Intermediate to advanced.

Costa Cálida surf spots

The Murcia coast gets less swell than Alicante province but the exposed spots are more consistent when a swell arrives.

6. Bolnuevo (Mazarrón)

Long sandy beach south of Cartagena. Consistent 0.5-1 m south-east swell in autumn. Longboard-friendly. Great community of local windsurfers and beginners.

7. La Zenia point (Orihuela Costa)

Small right-hand point break at the north end of La Zenia beach. Best in late autumn.

The Costa Blanca coast is more famous internationally for wind sports than for surf.

Torre la Sal / Marina d'Or (Castellón, north of Costa Blanca proper): Spanish kiteboarding capital. Consistent 15-25 knot summer thermal wind, sand-bottom.
El Palmar (Valencia city): freshwater lagoon inside the Albufera park, glassy conditions, wing-foil and hydrofoil paradise.
Guardamar dunes: pure sand, cross-shore Levante wind, works for kite and wing.
La Manga (Mar Menor side): inland lagoon, flat water, chest deep, ideal for freestyle wing.

Is Costa Blanca better than the Basque Country or the Canaries for surf? No. The Basque Atlantic coast and the Canaries are proper Atlantic destinations with reliable year-round swell. The Costa Blanca is a supplementary surf coast for buyers whose main reason for moving here is climate, cost of living or family setup, and who surf as a side activity in the winter months.

Which local school teaches beginners best? Salinas Surf in Guardamar for pure surf; Kite School Costa Blanca in Torrevieja for kite and wing. Both run in Spanish and English; Salinas also runs Russian-language sessions in shoulder season.

Can kids learn here? Yes. Salinas Surf's kids camp runs June to August with 4-8 year olds on foam boards in waist-deep water on the flat inland side of Guardamar. Kite School Costa Blanca has a 10+ year old programme.
